My mom's boyfriend had these in his garage, war-time bring homes from his Uncle during WW2. The leather helmet appears to be from after WW1 and before WW2, it is also quite tiny so I think it is some sort of youth parade helmet.
The Metal helmet I am pretty sure is some sort of civilian corps, given the name under the helmet. Some sort of air protection thing, it's mostly the second leather helmet that I have no idea what it is... Attached Thumbnails

Correct me if I am wrong but the vehicle at 0:22 in this video is a Carden Loyd MkIV?
If so, I take that it is used as a light SP Artillery piece?

US Army Bans PMAGs. May,2012
Quote: The Army has ordered that soldiers may use only government-issued magazines with their M4 carbines, a move that effectively bans one of the most dependable and widely used commercial-made magazines on today’s battlefield.
...
The message did not single out PMAGs, but instead authorizes only the use of Army-issued aluminum magazines. The message offers little explanation for the new policy except to state that “Units are only authorized to use the Army-authorized magazines listed in the technical manuals.” Nor does it say what Army units should now do with the millions of dollars’ worth of PMAGs they’ve purchased over the years. http://www.military.com/daily-news/2...ifle-mags.html
So, I wonder which general at TACOM Life Cycle Management Command got a call from his retired buddy who works Brownell's complaining about the lack of orders for their product?
Good luck enforcing this one, Army Brass.

Ear Protection May,2012
Does anyone have any recommendations or experience to share wrt ear protection?
(there doesn't seem to be an existing thread)
I'm particularly interested in noise-cancelling ones, as the reports about the PIHP, issued to deployed British troops, seems fairly mixed.
I'd be grateful of any comments.

Drop leg vs chest carry vs anything else May,2012
For guys who have been deployed what is the best option for pistol carry? I've tried both for limited amounts of time. I won't be in a vehicle much. The only problem I've had is that the thigh holster tends to swing around like mad after maybe a short sprint or jog. Does anybody (hold on, let me clarify - no airsofters) have any good recommendations on a solid holster that will hold up while deployed?
I saw that specter gear had a drop leg platform for the M12 holster, has anyone tried that?

Roman Empire Helmet Plume Colors May,2012
So I've been looking into buying one of those Roman Helmets with the side flaps and plume or "broom head" on the top of it and have noticed that there are various colors: red, white, black, gold and sometimes multicolored. I know that the plumes represent an officer but do specific colors mean anything? Like red=Centurion while white=phalanx or something like that.
Does anyone know? Color me curious.
And I am buying the helmet just for fun. I have some Medieval ones as well.

Sketchbook Revolver vs semi-auto handgun grips? May,2012
Something I've been trying to figure out is, are there any benefits to the curve you see in double action revolver grips. Or simply put why do revolver have curved grips, as opposed to the grips you see on a semi-auto handgun which are lacking the curve.
Only 2 reasons i can think of as for why revolver has the curve is because it's a design feature left over from single action revolver (for possibly easy access to the hammer) and maybe to help reduce the felt recoil by driving the force going toward the hand downwards.
Maybe one of you guys can explain the difference to me, because I've tried to find out why and didn't really get anything useful.

Sketchbook Next "Assault Weapons" Ban: What are you doing in advance? May,2012
Hard to say when it will be or what it will consist of. Most extreme efforts have been Rep. McArthy's (D-NY) HB1022, which would have effected nearly everything, including 1903 Springfields, Ruger 10-22s, and spare parts. Other rediculous offensives have targeted ammunition, with the goal of banning everything that didn't have serial #s, to include reloading components. Most likely, future legislation would focus on 10+ capacity detachable magazines and rifles/pistols capable of accomodating them.
Past statements by our current President and Attorney General lead most in the shooting community to believe he'll go after guns if elected to a 2nd term. GOP challenger Mitt Romney has been no friend of teh 2nd Amendment in the past, but might offer some hope if he wins in November.
So, we've had plenty of time since the expiration of Bill Clinton's AWB to stock up on hi-cap magazines and get those rifles you've always wanted and are still somewhat-affordable.
I'm trying to have has many magazines as possible.
Current inventory:
AR: 15 Pmags (9 unused and in package, 6 used), 11 GI-type, 1 Brownells 20 round
AR 6.8 SPC 4 25rd, 1 17 rd.
AK-74: 13
AKM: 11 30 rd, 2 20 rd, 1 40 rd
Galil: 7 (5 South African, 2 Israeli)
HK91/G3: 21
FAL: 20
Uzi: 3 30 rd, 10 25 rd
1911A1: 10
Glock: 9mm-4, .40S&W-4, .45ACP-4
CZ-75: 4
BrowningHP: 3
(I've also got 10+ mags for the m1 carbine, and I three each for the Ruger 10-22 and MKII .22LRs)
I also ordered an extra lower receiver to keep on hand, for a future build.
So, what are the rest of you doing? Attached Thumbnails

Sketchbook Best Caliber & Ammunition for Small Game Hunting May,2012
This summer, I'll be taking a trip up to visit my uncle in Utah. He owns a large ranch, and he wants to take me Prairie Dog and ground squirrel hunting.
I've never been small game hunting, except for using a pellet rifle against field mice in my backyard, so I have very little experience in that subject. What I'm wondering is, what are the best calibers and ammunition to use against small game? And any tips for hunting them would be appreciated too!
Also, I've heard of explosive Rat shot ammo. Is it any good?
Prospective calibers: .17 AR, .22 LR, .22 WMR, .25 APC, FN 5.7x28, 9mm Para, .45 ACP, .44 Magnum, .223/5.56, and 6.8 SPC.
Don't want to use anything bigger than 6.8, because I think that's a waste against something so small.

Lauer Custom Weaponry May,2012
Some of you may already know that they sell Duracoat. I've been ordering from them for years and have never had an issue. The other day I ordered two 4 oz. bottles of paint, each a different color. When they arrived today both bottles were the same color. I called LCW and explained the situation and to my surprise I was told that they would send me the correct bottle free of charge and to keep the other bottle.
I expressed that I didn't want to see them lose money and that it wasn't necessary but the guy on the phone wouldn't hear of it. I had a shipping receipt in my email in less than an hour. :D
If any of you are looking for firearm coatings I highly recommend using LCW not only for the quality products but the uncommon and excellent customer service. www.lauerweaponry.com

Sketchbook Match grade barrel for pistol, worth it? May,2012
Now I know match grade barrels are of very high quality, but the thing I wonder is does a match grade barrel make difference on a pistol when compared to a normal quality barrel.
I'm thinking it of high tolerances and all that means better fit of bullet and barrel thus better accuracy, yet at the same time I think but a pistol barrel is so short atleast mine will be (4 inch barrel) and that any gain is could be wont justify the cost.

Sketchbook Nickel Boron BCGs: Are they worth it? May,2012
I've been hearing alot lately about Nickel Boron (NiB) coated, or treated, bolt groups and parts, and their vaunted 'self lubricity'. Do products like the Spikes NiB, Fail Zero, IonBond, etc etc perform as advertised? Is it just a marketing gimmick? Or, is it just one of those things that I'll just have to pony up the cash and see for myself? :)

.276 Pedersen and .280 British May,2012
How are both cartridges alike and different? What if the M1 Garand had been .276 instead of .30-06? What if the US had adopted the .280 instead of the 7.62 NATO. I understand the 6.8mm is similar, but less effective than either .276, or .280, so are there any rifles available today chambered for those rounds?

Sketchbook Dan Wesson Revolvers? May,2012
Now i've been looking at designs of different revolvers, and i'm now looking at barrels such as how to install them and all that. Anyways well looking around I ran into Dan Wesson revolvers, mainly how the barrels can be removed and exchanged very easily, considering it's pretty much a ring screwed on the end to hold a sleeve over the barrel and the barrel is just simply screwed in. Now that design I rather like because it's simple and looks very easily to work with, but the question i have about that design is how well do the barrels hold in the revolvers because i would think since they are just screwed on they could come loose come the gun firing.
So i'm wondering if any of you can answer that question about how secure the barrels are in this design.
Also correct me if i'm wrong but considering i can't find anything outside of Dan wesson revolvers using something like this, i'm guessing other revolver have barrel installed in a different and more difficult way.
